Snow

And less than a week after booking a vacation to the tropics, this is the scene on William St:
While I do hate winter-it is kinda pretty. And peaceful.

The Grind

So, wow- a whole month has passed since I last wrote--sorry! I feel like so much has happened, and at the same time, nothing at all. As a former co-worker and fellow blogger puts it:

"We are living our day to day lives...working the daily grind. That doesn’t provide for much blogging material. Also... when I have nothing exciting to blog about... I’m not going to blog."

One exciting thing (looking for small victories here) HARRY POTTER came out last night, and we went at midnight! The crowd was rowdy and good fun- it's a very cool thing to be a part of something that has meant so much to all different generations.

What else???

Weddings have happened. Since that last post, I have been to three weddings. My 6-8 of the year. Please understand this- I am VERY happy for my friends who have found their life partners, but it's getting a little hard to deal with. Most of the time I am busy enough not to notice how lonely I am, but I am. Lonely. In theory I have made the decision that while I am still living in Chambana, I am not interested in finding a boyfriend. Please don't misunderstand me, I'm also not turning people away just because they live here (if you really know the intimacies of my life, you're probably laughing--people? what people? She doesn't see any people!) True. Sorry to bum you out, just trying to be honest.
Work keeps me crazy busy as usual. The "Team Leader" position has been eliminated and now they are referring to us as "Charge Nurses". I am really enjoying being in charge, and usually think I do a pretty good job. Last week I had my first experience of..."being the boss" (as opposed to my usual m.o. which is to just be their normal friend and co-worker who also does a lot of behind the scene fire-extinguishing ans decision-making). I had to raise my voice, say something pompous like "I'm in charge, I call the shots, and this is how it's gonna be--deal with it!" It made me really uncomfortable, but it turned out ok I think. I'm a little bummed about the holidays. I was still on orientation last year so I didn't have to work any. This year, I work Thanksgiving night, Christmas night, and New Years Eve. With many nights in between. Which means no traveling and no family time. Lame. At least I have Christmas eve off. That's my favorite!
It's getting cold out...winter is not really something I enjoy...good thing I have friends who are willing to plan tropical vacations with me- something fun in March around my birthday is in the works! Trying to stay positive people! Thanks for the support!
And just so you aren't left picture-less: Miss Belle, who is turning 1 next month!!!

Influences

This week was a pretty good week. Friday night, I had a date with a farmer. He is the brother of a co-worker and she's been trying to set us up for months. Finally, I agreed to her giving him my phone number, so we have talked on the phone for the last few weeks. Friday he drove up (he lives on his farm in Pana, which is about 2 hours away), and took me to dinner, frozen custard, and a movie. And while I've since decided that it's not gonna work out, it was really fun to be taken out on the town like that!
Then I worked 4 nights in a row. The first night, I was team leader again, and it went really well. No emergencies, good patients, good teamwork. The next two nights, I got to be in the nursery. It was a relief, because I was a little worried that becoming team leader would mean that I could never be in the nursery anymore (since I'm needed on the floor). And on Tuesday night- I got to be in the NICU! Those of you who remember my early nursing dreams might recall that for years (probably 10+) I wanted to be one thing and one thing only--to be a NICU nurse! Then, since getting my current job, whenever I go down to the NICU with patients, I am only intimidated by the tiny, sickly babies, and many beeping monitors-nothing seemed appealing about it at all. So Tuesday, when I got to work and they asked if I was willing to float down there, I was hesitant. But it turned out to be really nice! I had three "feeder-grower" babies, which are exactly what they sound like- basically babies that are just too small to go home, but aren't really on oxygen, or ventilators, or anything invasive anymore. It was a really good night-at least until I got a lap full of breast-milk and had to go change my pants!Today I went in to talk to the scheduler about a day she needed me to switch around, and when I was leaving, she asked if I would rather be cross-trained to labor and delivery, but stay on nights, or stay on postpartum, but go back to days...no question- bring me back to days! (She didn't say anything more than that, but keep your fingers crossed!)
Now I get a few days off, and after a night catching up with my good friend Kim tomorrow, we will be off to the suburbs to party at the wedding of friends Mark and Jesse on Saturday! Yay!

I have to admit: Since basically all I do when I'm not working or sleeping is watch tv, I have come to the point where my mood is influenced by what I watch (sick I know). "Grey's Anatomy" tonight was actually sort of uplifting- ending with Derek telling Meredith to stop worrying about the future, and focus on enjoying the present. This is a huge problem for me. I am CONSTANTLY planning, plotting, and dreaming about my future and not really enjoying the present moment. Today, while running errands, I stopped for a minute and took a deep breath of the fall air. I had forgotten how much I truly love this season: the warm breezes, the dry air, the beautiful colors, the crisp cool night air- LOVE IT! And I'm really going to try to be more appreciative of the every day moments.

Where has the summer gone?

So, yeah, I get it, I know I've been neglecting you all for the last month, sorry!
I went to Seattle, and it was wonderful, and fun, and I just had a difficult time transitioning back to my boring life in Champaign-Urbana. For those of you not on Facebook, here's a taste of what I'm missing now:

See? It's just so lovely out there! If only it was 2 hours away instead of 4 (on a plane)!
Now I'm back in that work-sleep-watch lots of bad tv routine...there's not much to say really.
It is officially fall here in C-U and the weather is delightful! I'll admit, since getting back, I have not once attempted running...that was short-lived...but Emily and I have been taking some neighborhood walks!
Last night was my first time in my new role as permanent TL (Team Leader, think of it as assistant charge nurse). It was going fine until about 10pm when I got a newly delivered red-headed patient, and she proceeded to have a massive hemorrhage. We really weren't prepared to handle it- all of the nurses working last night had the same (or less) experience that I do, and they don't happen very often (thankfully). No matter how much classroom instruction we get, everything moves so quickly that it gets scary fast. And, I'm sure this will come as a total shock to those of you who know me best, but hemorrhages, and other medical emergencies, are things that I can't CONTROL, which is makes me really uncomfortable. Luckily, my team was AWESOME, and everyone stepped in and helped, including the charge nurse from Labor and Delivery and two doctors. The patient has since recovered, and hours of charting later, I think I am starting to too. Needless to say- I learned A LOT, so hopefully next time it will go better! Saturday I have another go at the whole team leader thing, so maybe that time I can stay in control and be a good leader.

Vroom Vroom

Folks, I have a new baby! In a whirlwind of phonecalls and planning, on Monday, mom and dad brought home my NEW CAR! (Ok, it's not technically new, but pretty close-and it's new to me!) Thanks to a VERY GENEROUS and loving Gandfather- I am now the owner of his 2007 Honda Civic LX. It's AWESOME, and fancy, and much like this house, makes the old one PALE in comparison. Let's face it, the neon had more than it's fair share of problems. It was fine for my first car, and I learned a lot about car ownership (and maintenance) but this new one is like my grown-up car. It is the adult version of "Old Blue" (the civic Emily and I both learned to drive in when we turned 16). Basically I'm in love. How could I not be:

I've completed week 2 of my "Couch to 5 K". It's still hard, but my body doesn't totally fight it anymore, and it feels really great to be exercising again(or, to be exercising. period.).
Labor Day weekend, Bethany (and boyfriend Jay) and Liz, Charlie, and baby Belle were in town, so I actually got to socialize a bit. Last night I went out for dinner with friend Paven, who I haven't seen in months, so we had lots to catch up on. Wednesday, I fly to SEATTLE!!! September is shaping up to be pretty fantastic!

Time

I was blessed this week to have 3 whole nights off! In a row! And while I've really enjoyed (and needed) the time off, it has flown by, and tomorrow I have to go back! So what have I been up to?
Well, I've completed 2 days of the "Couch-to-5K" workout program. It's basically a training program on a podcast (thing you listen to on the Ipod), that consists of intervals of walking and running. It's a nine week program that builds from week one, where you alternate walking for 90 seconds and running for 60 seconds for a total of 30 minutes, to week 9, where you run the whole 30 minutes (approximately 5k). Those of you who know me well know how much I despise exercise, and while I still do, this seems fairly manageable. We'll see if I stick with it. I have seen all different (and interesting) parts of our new neighborhood, and my body feels a little bit stronger already.
I also have been doing a little gardening. I bought some fall pansies and mums, and our front porch is bursting with greenery! (Pictures to come) I did get two bug bites on my foot- one on my big toe that ITCH, but that's ok! Hopefully I can keep all the plants alive until winter!
Last night I did some major quilt work. I still haven't gotten to any actual sewing yet, but we're getting close! I have completed the whole front half (by completed I mean cut out, ironed, and backed the squares), and tonight I'm gonna start on the back half:

Two weeks from today and I'm off to Seattle again! Yay!

Long Time, No See

That's because last week, I worked 6/7 days. That is too many. But my paycheck was AWESOME.
This week isn't a whole lot better, and we have had a full house all week (as in, 0 free rooms, filling up the empty ones as soon as we discharge someone). I'm on call tomorrow at 3pm, which means, more than likely, I will be working a 16 hour shift. I'm not really sure any of this is legal, and I know it's INSANE, but the other day, my boss stopped me in the hall and said that she had gotten more applause cards (appreciation from patients for great customer service) about me than anybody else. So I guess I'm handling the madness better than I think.
And just so you don't go feeling too sorry for me, here's a little story:
The other night at work, a new dad comes up to the desk and says "Get this- I got one baby momma in this room, and one baby momma in that room. This one knows, but the other chick doesn't. Ha." Um...what?! Congrats? I guess? And the two babies are lying there in the nursery, in cribs right next to each other, and don't even know that they are half-sisters and that this may be the only chance they get to meet--it's like something out of a movie!
This weekend was the annual Urbana Sweet Corn Festival- Delicious! Gotta love a lemon-shake-up!

As I previously mentioned, I was asked by the unit Educator to work on another bulletin board, and after another brainstorming session with Brittany, right before she moved to Iowa (:( ), I came up with an AWESOME board (if I do say so myself). See:
Full of Breastfeeding positions, Information about the Breastfeeding Clinic, Benefits of Breastfeeding, A "Resources" pamphlet for them to take, and much more!
Last night was one of my hardest nights to date. Let's just put it this way- the highlight of the evening was when I had to give an enema to a 400+ pound woman. Yeah. Yikes.
Anyway, I have the next two days off, thank GOD.

Creativity

As I've mentioned before, hobbies and creativity in general are not really my forte.
So at work we have this bulletin board. On it, we keep a running tally of the babies born each month. The staff takes turns being responsible for one month and coming up with something cute.
My lovely friend Brittany helped me on a shopping trip to Michael's, and it turned out pretty well:
The blue stars are for boy babies, and the red stars are for girl babies. We had a total of 211 born in the month of July! The board got a little crowded! And my boss was so impressed she asked that I come up with an even larger design for National Breastfeeding Awareness month (August)...so I have to be brilliantly creative again! (Gulp!)

WOW

As sleeping and working have become my life, I was very excited to come across this BED.
When I become a bajillionare, this WILL BE where I sleep!

Road Trips Galore

So, shortly after going to the night shift, I realized that if I never had more than 3 days off at a time I would never be able to travel and spend time with friends (day 1 is spent sleeping and day 3 is spent sleeping, which leaves 1 day in between to go, hang out, and come back...) So, I begged the scheduler to help me out, and she worked it so I could have 6 days off at a time! In order to do this, I have more than one 4-days-in-a-row stretch, which is NOT fun, but worth it! So, this past week was spent having fun!
On Friday, after sleeping for most of the day, I woke up and drove to Chicago to spend some time with my dear friends, Bethany, Julia, and Sarah. Friday night Bethany and I went out for dinner at a local pub in Logan Square and "hosted" as Julia (and new boyfriend) and Sarah (and Fiance) took turns braving the downpour to join us for a drink. We stayed dry and had a great time! Saturday, Julia, Sarah and I headed downtown to shop for dresses we all needed to wear for upcoming weddings. That night Julia and I went to Smoke Daddys, for some BBQ and Blues. Sunday I went out to brunch with the Taylor family, did some shopping, and then went to a lovely birthday party for Colin's fiancee Kristin (Bethany's future sister in law) where I also got to meet Bethany's new man. Sunday night, I drove momma Taylor home to C-U. It was good fun, and I discovered a new hobby: EATING. Seriously folks, I think I ate the entire city of Chicago in 3 days. I mist have a tape worm or something, because I felt ravenous every 2-3 hours, and ate a full meal, non-stop! Hello obesity!
Tuesday, Emily and I both had the day off, and we were super excited to have a FUN DAY! We had big plans to go to Holiday World (in Santa Claus, Indiana) or maybe Knights Action Park, but the forecast called for storms. :( So on to plan B- we would drive to Indianapolis (with a stop along the way) and shop! Get ready: PHOTO MONTAGE!!!
So Excited!!!

We stopped on the way for BEEF HOUSE!!! (Delicious food in Covington, IN)
The Rolls are the BEST part!!!
After making the rounds at the Circle Center mall, we had to stop shopping for a bit and have a snack (obviously, since I can't go longer than 3 minutes without eating!)
Without the help of our friendly "Tom-Tom", we never would have made it there (or back!)

It was a good time, and we just have so much fun together! Last night, I went out for drinks with my dear friend, and now-former-coworker Brittany, who sadly is moving shortly to Iowa with her husband. I'm gonna miss her!

Photo overload!

Ok, ok, without further ado-pictures of our new digs!
Warning: The following post is almost entirely pictures- LOVE it!

One of the first things we did together once all the boxes were unpacked was hang pictures. We were both pretty excited by our creation of "The International Wall"-dedicated to our photos and art pieces from our world travels (complete with a world map, of course!)
Our entry way bookshelf (one of 5 in the house; guess that's what you get living with a librarian)
Our new bathroom is luxurious (complete with whirlpool tub). And Emily let me display my love for HIPPOS in an obvious and adorable way--thanks Em!
My new blue room- it has blinds, pull-down-roller shades, and light blocking curtains--it gets so dark in there, I can't even see my hand 6 inches in front of my face-
PERFECT for daytime sleeping (even without an eye mask!)
Emily's new room- it's pretty and pink!
Two of my favorite pieces, the mirror and the COUCH, made it safely (thanks to some great movers!) to the new house, and look great in our living room.
This is our dry erase calendar. It is going to keep track of when we work, when we don't, and when we might actually get to see each other!
Mom and Dad came over for dinner last night-Em & I made Asiago Encrusted Pork Chops and Summer zucchini and squash with spices, with Apple crisp for dessert! It was delicious!
So, um, yeah, I decided that the blonde was getting a little bright- and to better embrace my vampire-like habits these days-DARK auburn hair (with pasty pale skin!) My new look!
Something new I tried last night while relaxing on the patio at Cowboy Monkey (a local drinking establishment) Smith's Strawberry Ale- Delicious!

New-ness

Hi Readers! As you clearly figured out- I've changed blogs! It doesn't make sense to have a blog where the url includes Oregon St, which I no longer live on- so here's a new one!
The Ward girls are once again under the same roof! We moved on Wednesday and have spent what little time were aren't at work or sleeping unpacking and getting settled. Our new house is much nicer and more newly renovated than my old place so I think we will avoid many of the escapades I had on Oregon St.
Work has been nuts as usual- my boss just told me we have had a 28% increase in patient volume during the last year, which explains the chaos! On Friday night, we had 8 babies between 7pm and 11pm! And today they did 15 discharges! Crazy!!!
Anywho, glad you found the new blogs, and I promise to put up pictures as soon as I can!
